Dr Kiruba's work

Dr Kiruba had been associated with many projects while working in St Johns Research Institute, Bangalore.

WORK CATEGORIES
In research – Part of some successful researches such as improved birth & death registration levels through implementation of active surveillance for vital events, increase in soap use rates for hand washing through a BCC intervention in rural households. Successfully completed five research projects from 2007-12. Dissertation on microfinance as a tool for women's empowerment and improvements in maternal and child health

Preparation of training material and manuals  - Developed training modules for physician coders for international use in PURE study using LMS; and for SBA training for staff nurses especially in infection control, documentation, auditing

Conducted trainings- Trained staff nurses of primary health centres in skilled birth attendance (SBA) and Basic Emergency Obstetric Care (BEmOC); Organized workshops/CMEs

In Assessments - Designing program strategy and tools for assessment of MNCH services in rural districts of Karnataka; Analysis of assessments of service provision and quality assessments in rural districts of Karnataka; Investigation of epidemics of diarrhoea, anthrax, flaccid paralysis

Evaluation and program review - Effectively evaluated the mid day meal program

Writing grants and proposals- Obtained research grants from IAEA, ICMR and ILSI

Publications – Submitted four project completion reports and three journal publications (more in preparation)

Program implementation – Coordinated Pulse Polio immunization and Mass Drug Distribution for Filaria; provided preventive and supportive treatment for people affected by Tsunami, flash floods

The last projects he was working for in Chattisgarh were about -
1. Double fortification salt efficacy
2. Solar lighting
3. Healthy development brain function index for early cognitive development in children


Additional achievements -

  • Dr Kiruba also had a Postgraduate Certificate in Industrial Health from Sri Ramachandra University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
  • He had got admission for PhD in NIMHANS in Bangalore.
  • He received admission into PhD in Health Informatics in Minnesota University, USA. ( He was planning to pursue it).

About Dr Kiruba Sankar






Dr Kiruba Sankar Varadharajan


 Kiruba studied at Bharathi Vidya Bhavan at Erode, Tamil Nadu. He completed his MBBS from Government Stanley Medical College, Chennai and M. D in Community Medicine from JIPMER, Pondicherry, India. He had been working in St John's Research Institute, St John's National Academy of Health Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka, India, since 2007.

He lost his life in a tragic accident on 20th October, 2014.


A soft spoken person with a helping nature, he was liked by all who knew him. He was always appreciated for the work he did.

Let us remember him not with grief but with appreciation for the person he was and the work he did ....
